St.Gallen to develop a new quarter

The city of St.Gallen is looking into building an overpass over the St.Fiden railway station. Test planning has already shown that major potential exists for developing a new quarter in the St.Fiden-Heiligkreuz area.

According to the city of St.Gallen, the new quarter will connect the St.Fiden and Heiligkreuz districts. The statement refers to a test planning, completed at the end of 2017, which shows a “very high development potential” for a dense, urban peripheral development to the northwest and southeast of the tracks of the St.Fiden railway station.

The test planning did not, however, suggest an overpass, which is why the city of St.Gallen has now commissioned the St.Gallen-based planning and development firm Nüesch Development to examine the feasibility of such a concept. Nüesch will lead a project team to look into an overpass and conduct a detailed analysis of the economic viability and technical conditions.

The city of St.Gallen wants to create decision criteria for further action based on “technical, economic and urban spatial development”. To this end, the possible development of the southeastern SBB site and planned enclosure of the A1 motorway will also be taken into account during the planning phase.

The Zurich-based firm KCAP Architects&Planners has been awarded the contract for the urban planning work. The city of St.Gallen expects to receive initial results in autumn 2018.
