Having secured the coordination of this initiative of the H2020 program, whose budget amounts to over 5 million Swiss francs, the HES-SO Valais/Wallis will oversee the European research project EXA MODE, in the field of large medical data treatment.
“We have responded to a tender where the quality control of submissions was rigorous and selective. In this case, the acceptance rate was around 8%”, explains Dr. Henning Müller, Professor of computer management leading a multidisciplinary unit dedicated to E-Health and composed of 25 people.
With this project, the HES-SO Valais/Wallis becomes the first institute of the network of universities of applied sciences of Western Switzerland to coordinate an H2020 initiative. EXA MODE’s objective is to develop new computer prototypes that will allow the treatment of large medical data for examining bulk histopathologic images coming from cancer biopsies and other conditions. The use of AI algorithms will offer better descriptions of the pathologies and hence better treatment decisions.
Cutting-edge competencies in the canton of Valais
The Institute of Computer Management is one of the seven research establishments of the HES-SO Valais/Wallis. Over 100 researchers take part in about 300 ongoing projects on local, national or European levels in the fields of E-Health, E-Services, E-Government or ERP. “For our branch in Sierre, being able to lead EXA MODE is a fine recognition of our work by the European Commission”, concludes Dr. Henning Müller.
