The city council receives excellent marks regarding reduction success of emissions, public procurement clear cars, non-road mobile emission sources, traffic and mobility management as well as the transparency of communication. Good marks were attributed for the use of economic incentives, promotion of public transport and the promotion of walking and cycling.

The European City Ranking is part of the Soot-free for the Climate! Campaign as well as the us. The goal is to demonstrate that many local solutions to improve air quality exist and to find out how cities use these solutions, if at all. The ranking mainly focuses on efforts made to reduce particulate matter with a particular focus on black carbon, as well as nitrogen dioxide. In the European Union nearly half a million premature deaths are caused by air pollution. The average life expectancy of people living in cities and the most polluted areas is reduced by over two years.
