Säntis Malt, a whisky distillery which belongs to Brauerei Locher in Appenzell in the St.GallenBodenseeArea, has claimed several prizes at the World Whiskies Awards 2023 in London. These awards recognize whiskies from around the world on an annual basis.

According to a press release, the limited Rainbow Series No. 1 from Säntis Malt with the Freedom single malt was awarded Gold and was also named as the winner of the International Best Whisky category. The single malt Hope and Passion variants were also awarded silver.

The awards are “an international recognition of the inventiveness and hard work of our team, which combines tradition and innovation. Our Rainbow Series No. 1 embodies the very best whisky that we have to offer and we are proud that it is gaining greater attention around the world”, comments Aurèle Meyer, Managing Director of Brauerei Locher. Only 600 bottles of the limited edition Rainbow Series No. 1 Freedom were produced, while just 1,000 and 2,000 bottles of Hope and Passion were respectively produced.

According to the Säntis Malt distillery, it has been producing Säntis Malt since 1999. Previously, the production of high-proof alcoholic drinks on the basis of staple foods such as grain or potatoes was prohibited in Switzerland. The law was repealed on July 1, 1999. A year earlier, Brauerei Locher started production of Appenzeller Säntis Malt under the supervision of the Swiss Alcohol Board, before the first whisky was then launched on the market in 2002.

According to the distillery, grain from Swiss mountain areas and spring water from the Alpstein range are used to make the whisky. The product is stored in beer barrels made from oak, some of which can be up to 150 years old, which is described as a globally unique feature.
