Under the rules established in the Paris Agreement (established in 2015 and effective since November 2016), it is possible for countries to validate carbon reductions greater than the nationally defined contributions (NDC) that form the basis of their agreed national actions. This allows, in certain circumstances, for an international transfer of the outcomes.
In Switzerland it is the Klik foundation that is entrusted with managing these international transfers.
What is the Foundation for Climate Protection and Carbon Offset KliK and how can you get support for climate action?
The Swiss Foundation for Climate Protection and Carbon Offset KliK is a private organization that fulfils an official role under the Swiss CO₂ Act. It is mandated as the carbon offset grouping of Swiss motor fuel importers to offset in Switzerland and abroad part of the emissions caused by the Swiss transportation sector. It is tasked with reducing around 20 million tons of CO₂e abroad by 2030. The Foundation for Climate Protection and Carbon Offset KliK therefore supports climate mitigation activities in countries that have currently signed a bilateral climate protection agreement with Switzerland: Dominica, Georgia, Ghana, Malawi, Morocco, Peru, Senegal, Thailand, Ukraine, Uruguay, and Vanuatu.
Through the purchase of ITMOs (Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes), the KliK makes climate protection programs financially viable. The emission reductions achieved are transferred in accordance with international rules and used toward meeting Switzerland’s emission reduction target under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.
How can your company benefit from this mechanism?
To strengthen their commitment to climate action abroad, KliK invites Swiss SMEs to submit their climate protection programs.
