Reiden Mehlsecken has been selected by swisspor as the site for its new production plant for mineral insulation materials and service center. The international company has secured the purchase of a strategic business site spanning 200,000sqm from the Canton of Lucerne, the Chancellery of Lucerne has revealed. The planned creation of a building and environmental technology cluster by swisspor is backed by the Canton of Lucerne and the municipality of Reiden.
Overall, swisspor will utilize 145,000 sqm of the site for its own facilities. The remainder is earmarked for research organizations and others working in the field of building and environmental technology. The Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts intends to expand its existing collaboration with swisspor in Reiden Mehlsecken.
Furthermore, businesses and research partners associated with the sector will be approached. This was reportedly all coordinated by the Switzerland Innovation Park Central. The Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (Empa) was among those contacted.
“We support the creation of a building and environmental technologies cluster with swisspor and the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts,” said Governing Councilor Fabian Peter. The head of the Department of Construction, Environment and Economic Affairs rates this as an opportunity for the region and the canton in two respects: “first, this will create jobs, innovation and added value and second, the cluster will help us achieve our climate targets.”
