Ocumeda, a company headquartered in the St.GallenBodenseeArea, has received a grant of 150,000 Swiss francs from Venture Kick, a start-up accelerator based in Schlieren in the canton of Zurich. According to a press release, the start-up is a telemedicine network comprising ophthalmologists that offers low-threshold eye examinations in cooperation with opticians, retirement homes and companies.
Ocumeda intends to use the new funds to expand the offering for connected ophthalmologists on its telemedicine platform and to establish its eye screening service in Switzerland and Germany. The Ocumeda platform is based on the cloud and offers eye care services. Around 35,000 opticians and pharmacies are available as potential partners for the service, according to the Venture Kick press release. The eye exams are assessed by certified ophthalmologists connected to Ocumeda's telemedicine platform. The start-up supports its patients throughout the entire treatment process, from initial screenings and appointments with local ophthalmologists to regular check-ups.
In parallel to this, Ocumeda is developing medical products on the basis of Artificial Intelligence (AI) that help to evaluate the examinations more rapidly and more precisely and the decode the mysteries of the human eye, the press release states.
“Ocumeda’s innovative AI developments have the potential to support doctors in the future in the diagnosis and treatment of eye and systemic diseases at an early stage”, comments Ocumeda co-founder Professor Marcel Menke in the press release.
