SWISSto12 takes the lead in Europe’s evolving space industry with HummingSat solutions

SWISSto12 will speed up its HummingSat project with the ESA, thanks to a EUR 30 million grant from the ESA Ministerial Council. The project will be advanced through the launch of the GEO satellite, HummingSat.

The EPFL start-up is currently the fastest growing aerospace company in Switzerland and a leading manufacturer of advanced satellite payloads and systems.

Vaud-based start-up SWISSto12’s solutions have become an essential component of Europe’s evolving space sector. Indeed, the EPFL spin-off works closely with the ESA to drive innovation in the European space industry and create new satellite products. Its HummingSat product line, developed in partnership with the ESA, is the first of its kind for telecommunications satellite provider Intelsat. This makes SWISSto12 the first scale-up specialist in the industry’s history to sign a contract of this caliber with a major telecommunications operator.

Inspired by the nimble hummingbird, SWISSto12’s HummingSat line highlights the game-changing technologies emerging in Europe’s space industry. These lightweight and compact satellites offer a more cost-effective and sustainable solution than traditional satellites, leading to improved global connectivity.

The HummingSat Partnership Project with the European Space Agency (ESA) is now moving into the roll-out phase thanks to fresh subscriptions in excess of EUR 30 million received at the ESA Ministerial Conference Meeting. Participating States are Switzerland, Germany, Sweden, Canada, Austria, and the Netherlands, with further subscriptions expected to be received soon.

Pioneering next-gen space solutions

“At SWISSto12, we are proud to be at the core of Europe’s new space ecosystem. With our HummingSat product line, we are building a next-generation telecommunications infrastructure to reliably connect communities and businesses. ESA has been an invaluable partner in funding and expertise along this journey. The new funding will help us to make the disruptive technology of HummingSat a global success”, said Emile de Rijk, SWISSto12 founder and CEO.

Demand is growing for advanced satellites, advanced communications and more sustainable access to space globally and in Europe. SWISSto12 intends to strengthen the European space sector in order to maintain its competitiveness on the global market.
