For the second time, Obwaldner Kantonalbank (OKB), which is the cantonal bank of Obwalden, has recognized commitment to sustainability on the basis of its promotional prize. Three projects were recognized by the award, for which prize money totaling 35,000 Swiss francs overall is on offer, as OKB writes in a press release. The awarded projects were successfully selected from a long-list of 25 applications.

First place and prize money of 20,000 Swiss francs went to the Naturforschende Gesellschaft Obwalden und Nidwalden (NAGON). The organization is committed to ensuring the biodiversity of outdoor areas at schools. These outdoor spaces are intended to develop an interest in natural sciences among students and to promote an understanding of the natural world.

Second place and prize money of 10,000 Swiss francs went to the association Generationentreff Sarnen, which comprises a total of 13 institutions based in the canton of Obwalden. Together, they transformed the old playground near to Sarnen rail station into a cross-generational meeting point, where young and old alike can test themselves on balancing apparatus and an obstacle course – there is something for everyone.

In third place, and securing prize money of 5,000 Swiss francs, is the Selbsterntegarten. This project involved setting-up extensive allotments, where members of the organization can grow their own crops. At present, five such allotments are to be found in the canton of Obwalden, with another located in the canton of Lucerne.

“It appears that sustainability is a big deal in our small canton”, comments Sandro Widmer, Sustainability Officer at OKB, in the press release. “And this covers a huge spectrum of activities”, he adds. OKB plans to award its promotional prize again next year, for which applications can be submitted online from mid-July 2024 onwards.
