Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU) is offering Switzerland’s first undergraduate degree program in immersive technologies from the beginning of the fall semester 2024. The aim of the Bachelor of Science in Immersive Technologies, which will be held in English, is to train experts in the areas of augmented and virtual reality, serious games and immersive media production. The course will be based at the Campus Zug-Rotkreuz.
Although the need for experts in this field is huge, a course of this kind has never existed in Switzerland before, as HSLU writes in a press release. “For businesses, the merging of reality and virtuality offers a variety of potential”, comments course director Prof. Nathaly Tschanz. Before adding: “The use cases are already becoming increasingly diverse today”.
For example, production processes could be simulated and cost-effective prototypes could be implemented. Surgeons could even be trained on a virtual basis. In urban planning, 3D visualizations could potentially offer an improved basis for decision-making processes, while serious games, i.e. games designed for a primary purpose other than pure entertainment, are already being used in the treatment of anxiety disorders or as rehab treatment for stroke patients.
The study program’s target group is technology-savvy creatives with an interest in computer science as well as visual and creative implementations. The course is structured to be highly project-centric, while partnerships with international companies are also set to play a role.
