Facts&figures of the French food market
France is a mature and conservative market. However, it imports about 20% of its food, amounting to €56 billion in 2022. Buyers are open to foreign suppliers if they bring something new and different to their assortment, or if they can be a lot more competitive in terms of price and quality, compared to a French supplier. French households spend an average of €488 per month on food (versus €385 before the inflation).
80% of the food is bought in the major retailers. In France, there are two systems: the integrated retailers and the independent ones. The integrated such as Carrefour, Auchan, Casino group, Aldi or Lidl have one national purchasing center that centralizes the decisions and the purchases. Whereas the independent retailers (Leclerc, Intermarché and Systeme U) have regional purchasing centers that require to go visit each of them separately.
